Effect and Interaction of Alcohol and Flagyl. Is it safe to take both?

Before giving a straight answer to this question, knowing a few things about these substances is necessary to understand why they are safe or not safe entirely; the section bill would briefly describe the composition of Alcohol and Flagyl

What is Alcohol?

Also known as ethanol, alcohol is just an organic substance found in drinks, beers, wines, liquors, and spirits that make one intoxicated; the organic compounds on them can create a feeling of relaxation when taken mildly and can distort the brain function if taken in excess. It is usually present in fermented fruits or even distilled spirits, and one takeaway is that it intoxicates.

What is Flagyl?

Going by the generic name of Metronidazole, this substance is an antibiotic drug used to treat abdominal discomfort, prevent some form of STD(Sexually Transmitted Diseases), skin infections, and even bone and joint problems.

The versatile use of this drug is what tends to make it a familiar place must-have in people’s homes and offices.

Like most multi-purpose drugs, Flagyl has side effects(drowsiness, light headache, etc., which are common after administration).

With this backdrop, it would be suitable to look into the interaction between these substances and how safe they are when taken together, so we move.

Interaction between Alcohol and Flagyl. Is it safe to take both?

To state if it is safe to take alcohol and Flagyl together would require we examine the interaction between these substances and expound our judgment based on the observation.

Alcohol, when taken into the human body, takes two procedures to be fully digested; one of them is the process where the liver breaks down the acetaldehyde(a compound contained in the alcohol)l to allow the next stage of digestion to take place.

The next stage of this metabolism is where this acetaldehyde is further broken down into acetate, which is then easily digested and circulated by transporting bodies to areas needed for the body.

The problem here with taking alcohol with Flagyl rest in the fact that the latter contains an enzyme that inhibits the process where the acetaldehyde should be broken down, which would result in too much of this toxin present in the human body, thereby aggravating the side effect taking too much alcohol could cause as well as the side effect from taking the drug Flagyl.

As a result of this heightened effect, the scenario mentioned above sparks up a reaction where a person gets to experience an induced Antabuse (a symptom where alcoholics temporarily abstain from alcohol) coupled with increased side effects that could range from mild to severe.

It is right to say that it is not safe to take alcohol and Flagyl together; the interaction between these substances could not only lead to severe problems to one’s health but also death if not properly managed.  Put that the cons outweigh the pros.

Effects of taking Alcohol and Flagyl.

  • Abdominal pains
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Uncontrolled movement
  • Face paleness
  • Nervous disorder etc.

It is usually advised that one wait at least 72 hours before taking alcohol immediately after the last dosage of Flagyl; this is to allow the drug to not interfere with the former.

Conclusion

Nothing is as good as knowing what is good for your health and taking drastic steps to either change or teach good habits. To anyone reading this piece and still doubting the effect and interaction of alcohol and Flagyl, a word they say is enough for the wise to avoid habits that could jeopardize your health.
