How To Shrink Underwears | 9 Easy Ways

A garment or item of clothing worn next to the skin and beneath other clothing is known as underwear.

Nearly 7000 years ago, a prehistoric man covered and protected his loins with leather while going about his daily activities.

This is the earliest instance of underwear that has been discovered. Not much changed during numerous millennia.

What clothing is regarded as underwear?

Today, men wear briefs, trunks, boxer shorts, or boxer briefs, while women typically wear brassieres (bras) and panties (also known as knickers).

Uncomfortable underwear can be difficult to wear if it is baggy or loose-fitting. Consider attempting to shrink the cloth rather than tossing the underwear.

you can follow this youtube video guide or go ahead to read our simple easy procedures

Here are nine (9) steps to shrink your underwear:

  1. Washing the Underwear with Hot Water
  2. Read the printed label inside of the underwear to determine the material.
  3. Separate the underwear from the rest of your laundry.
  4. Use a washing machine to wash multiple garments quickly.
  5. Hand-wash a few undergarments to conserve water and energy.
  6. Air-dry the undergarments and try them on to see if the fit is better.
  7. Place the clean, damp underwear into the clothes dryer.
  8. Set the dryer to the hottest temperature setting for a 20-minute tumble cycle.
  9. Try on the dry underwear to see if the fit has improved.

1. Washing The Underwear With Hot Water

The underwear will probably only be able to be shrunk to the fitting size. For instance, treating the material with hot water or air would typically shrink the cloth to be a fitted medium if the underwear you purchased is a size medium and is baggy.

Think about returning newly bought, unworn underwear that seems to be one size too big for you. Whether you saved the receipt, check to see if the retailer where you bought the underwear will accept returns or exchanges for the unworn items.

The fabric is unlikely to shrink noticeably if the underwear is old or has already been washed and dried numerous times.

2. Read The Printed Label Inside Of The Underwear To Determine The Material

Locate the label along the elastic waistband on the inside of the underwear, and make a note of the material. Most likely, there will be some amount of cotton, spandex, or silky substance in the cloth.

When washed in hot water and dried, underwear composed mostly of cotton, wool, rayon, silk, and linen fibres will shrink.

Stretchy materials like polyester, nylon, and spandex won’t shrink much, and if you try to iron them under very high heat, you can even melt or permanently wrinkle the fabric.

3. Separate the underwear from the rest of your laundry.

Other clothing items could shrink if they are carelessly washed in hot water, and any delicate undergarment fibres could potentially be harmed. Make a wash load that is made up entirely of the underwear you want to shrink.

Wash new underwear made of silk or rayon alongside similar-coloured clothes. During the first wash, the dyes used to colour silk or rayon fabrics may bleed and stain other items.

4. Use a washing machine to wash multiple garments quickly

By soaking and gently cleaning the underwear in a single load, the washing machine will save you time.

Add some laundry detergent and underwear to the washing machine. Instead of using an all-purpose detergent, use a light detergent on delicate textiles like silk or lace. The washing machine door or lid should then be closed.

Set the washing cycle to mild or delicate, the load size to small, and the water temperature to hot. The hot water will start the textiles’ shrinking process, and the gentle cycle will prevent the tangling of the underwear.

The underpants can be washed by pressing the “start” button. A delicate washing cycle would typically last between 10 and 15 minutes, including washing and rinsing the clothes.

5. Hand-wash a few undergarments to conserve water and energy

If you also have particularly delicate underwear that could be harmed if washed in the washing machine alongside other underwear, use this technique. A few pairs of underwear can be gently cleaned and shrunk by hand washing without using any water or electricity.

The underwear should be submerged in hot water that has been added to a basin or pail.

The underwear should soak in the hot water for three to five minutes, or until there are no dry spots left on them.

To the water, add a few drops of light detergent. To clean the underwear, swish it around in the sudsy water with a rubber spatula. Give the underpants a couple more minutes to soak.

Remove the underwear from the basin with care, then rinse them in warm water to remove the soap.

6. Air-dry the undergarments and try them on to see if the fit is better

The underwear can be hung in a closet or spread out flat on a drying rack. After the underwear has dried naturally, you can decide if it needs to be further shrunk. The fit should be substantially tighter when you put on the dry underwear.

Repeat washing the underwear in hot water if necessary to achieve the desired shrinkage if it is still too loose fitting.

Until you know whether the underwear needs to be shrunk, even more, wait to put it in the dryer.

7. Place the clean, damp underwear into the clothes dryer

Your underwear will shrink less in the hot dryer if you initially washed it in cold water. Never dry underpants are comprised primarily of synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, or spandex. The cloth may get permanently wrinkled or harmed by the dryer’s heat.

If you hand-washed the underwear, squeeze any extra water out of the garments before putting them in the dryer by pressing them between two folded dry towels.

8. Set the dryer to the hottest temperature setting for a 20-minute tumble cycle

Look for the “cotton”-labelled temperature setting. This is the highest temperature setting on the majority of dryers. After that, set the dryer to tumble for around 20 minutes. A small to medium load of underwear should be able to dry entirely as a result without the textiles being harmed or burned.

After 20 minutes, check to see if the underwear is dry. If there are a few damp places, you may either re-dry the items in the dryer for another five minutes or allow the underwear to finish drying by air.

9. Try on the dry underwear to see if the fit has improved

The underwear’s fabric should fit much more snugly while still being roomy enough to allow for comfortable movement. Repeat the washing and drying procedure a further one or two times to further shrink the cloth if the underwear still seems too large.

Conclusion

Try to keep your underwear clean by washing with mild detergent and make sure to sundry it, to avoid bacteria.

Aim to change your underpants each day, and if you like, more than once! We appear to wear one pair of underpants per day before putting them in the washer to be laundered. That might not always be required.

Store them in a clean pant bag.
